Galvanized Steel vs. Aluminum Fence

When you are comparing metals it depends on the job and what your fence will be used for as to which will better suite your needs. If you want strength and reliable security then galvanized steel is a great option, but if you are looking for a lighter weight and more flexible option then aluminum may be for you. Let us take a look at some of the pros and cons for each.

Looking first at galvanized steel, again this is known for its strength. Galvanized means coated, and that coating is zinc which prevents things like corrosion and rust. It is probably the most trending alternative to wrought iron due to the similarities of galvanized to wrought iron to it and its affordability, when it comes to galvanized vs. wrought iron that is.

These fences are available in a number of colors and designs. They can be very decorative or intimidating depending on what you choose. Galvanized fences are extremely stylish options, and they can be far more expensive than aluminum due to their quality, durability and lasting beauty. A piece of galvanized fencing can range from $150 to $350 with the gates ranging from an estimate of $500 to $2,500 and posts costing up to $60 USD a piece. These prices do not cover personal instillation fees, and they can vary.

Galvanized fences are sturdy, durable and very stylish options that come with excellent warranties and amazing visual aesthetics. On the other hand they can be pricey, they are in some cases prone to eventual rusting and they can be very hard (or expensive) to install.

Looking at the alternative, aluminum fencing, we see another trending metal used for gates and fences. These are not fences that are used for privacy but rather for beautification, pool enclosures and security purposes instead.

With aluminum most all of the parts will be sold separately. Sections will cost from $80 to $130 and they are good sized. A typical side would be 6x10w and then 6 to 8ft tall. Posts run about $30, and you can get a gate for around $200 up to around $1,000. This is the cheaper alternative for anyone on a budget.

These are easier to handle and install, and they require a lot less maintenance than their competitors. Still, they are not as strong so dings and dents may occur from kids or even weather over time. Still, either option is a great choice for your home or business fencing needs.
